Programs

The William Joiner Center serves veterans, war refugees and survivors and victims of war through a wide range of programs dealing with the myriad consequences of war, violence and oppression. A Writers' Workshop, Vietnam Institute, Summer Study Program in Hue, Vietnam, Reading Series, Lecture Series, translation projects and conferences, panels and exhibits are designed to explore, elucidate and lessen the effects of war. They serve the additional purpose of educating students and others to war and its attendant suffering. The center's programs have dealt with the effects of the Spanish American War, World War II, Korea, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Sept. 11th and the War on Terrorism. It continues to explore ways to ameliorate that suffering.

After establishing cultural ties with Vietnam, the Joiner Center has initiated an educational exchange program which brings teachers and translators to the University of Massachusetts Boston for language training and returns them to Vietnam. Ongoing programs such as the Vietnam Institute, and the Lecture Series are additional educational components of the Center's mission.
