Erwin Parson Named Jesse Brown Award Recipient
Erwin Parson was named the recipient of the Jesse Brown Award for 2000 for his contributions to veterans. Parson, who is a psychologist, has done extensive work on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Through his research, writing and advocacy, he has ameliorated the suffering of veterans and contributed to the education of the public, the medical community and the Veterans Administration. Parson was Professor of War and Social Consequences at the William Joiner Center in the early 1990's.
The Jesse Brown Award is administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs and is named for the former Secretary of Veterans Affairs. A disabled Vietnam veteran, he served in that position under former President Clinton. He also served as executive director of the Disabled American Veterans. As secretary, Brown introduced significant changes, among them initiatives for the homeless, increased access to medical care and his "Putting Veterans First" campaign.
