NEWS AND NOTES

Joan McIntyre was honored for her work as the administrative assistant in the William Joiner Center during the June Writers’ Workshop. Now retired, she has been combining travel with working in the center in a consultant capacity since then.

Paul Atwood has published a review of a book by H. Bruce Franklin, Vietnam and Other American Fantasies, in fall 2001 issue of Radical Teacher. He also addressed the topic "Teaching About the Vietnam War" as a guest on radio station WUMB’s Commonwealth Journal in July.

VietBao Online, a popular Vietnamese e-magazine, put on the web a version of Professor Hoang Ngoc Hien’s essay on Vietnamese overseas literature following his residency as a Rockefeller Fellow at the Joiner Center. It was published in three installments on July 30 and August 1st and 2nd. An interview with him on his work and experiences in the United States was also broadcast in Vietnam.

Professor Nguyen Hue Chi had his article "Truyen Thong Dan Chu Trong Van Hoa Hanoi-Thang Long" (The Democratic Tradition in the Culture of Hanoi-Thang Long) published in Hop Luu, one of the premier exile literary journals. Another of his essays, "Phan Ky Van Hoc Viet Nam" (The Periodization of Vietnamese Literature), appeared in the August issue of Van Hoc Journal. Prof. Chi was a Rockefeller Fellow at the Joiner Center.

Caroline Kieu Linh Valverde, also a fellow in the Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Program, has been in residence to conduct research on "Elemental Change and Continuity: Vietnamese American Transnational Identities in the New Millennium." She has presented papers and conducted a seminar in the Joiner Center’s Vietnam Institute. She has been working closely with the Vietnamese-American community in the Boston area.

Patrick McCormack has joined the Joiner Center as staff assistant. Previously with the Office of Marketing and Information Services, he is a gifted musician and teaches guitar.

The Honorable Anthony Principi, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, delivered the keynote addressed at the 20th Annual Conference on the Concerns of Veterans, held at the Massachusetts State House May 10-11. In his address he stressed educational themes relating to veterans.

Senator John F. Kerry delivered the closing remarks at the Conference on the Concerns of Veterans. Sen. Kerry, a Vietnam veteran, has been involved with the conference for a number of years, both as a sponsor with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, and as a participant.

Carol Cullen has been named the new administrative assistant at the Joiner Center. She will split her time between the Joiner Center and the Office of Graduate Studies. Carol is also studying for a doctorate in history at Clark University.
