News from The Writers’ Workshop
In recent years, films and documentaries exploring some of the consequences have war have been featured in the Joiner Center’s Writers’ Workshop. This year two significant documentaries, Bestor Cram’s Unfinished Symphony and Mai’s Story by Marlo Poras, were screened for workshop participants.
Unfinished Symphony documents protests on Lexington Green by Vietnam Veterans Against the War which led to the largest mass arrest in Massachusetts history. Mai’s Story chronicles the hardships and challenges of a young Vietnamese-American woman as she struggles with issues of identity and education in her new land. Lynda Van Devanter’s Vietnam memoir Home Before Morning was also re-issued by the University of Massachusetts Press. The author visited the workshop in conjunction with its re-release.
