Vietnam Institute Examines New Histories and Popular Culture

The Vietnam Institute, which ran for three days at the end of June, attracted some 35 teachers to the UMass Boston campus with its theme, "The War in the High School Curriculum."

Participants explored a number of themes with a focus on recent books on the Vietnam War. From June 26-28 secondary school teachers from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island discussed the impact of these works on the curriculum.

Under the direction of Paul Atwood, institute director, visiting and UMass Boston faculty led the discussions. William Duiker, professor emeritus of history at Pennsylvania State University, discussed his new book, Ho Chi Minh. He was joined by Rutgers University professor H. Bruce Franklin, who led a discourse about his recent publication, Vietnam and Other American Fantasies. UMass Boston history professor David Hunt reviewed books on Vietnam published in the last few years, and Rockefeller Foundation fellow Caroline Kieu Linh Valverde presented a discussion of the theme of normalized suffering.

The institute, which marked its ninth year, is designed to expose high school and community college teachers to new research and contemporary thinking on the Vietnam War.
