Works in Translation
While there has been a wealth of writing about the war in Vietnam available from the U.S. perspective, very little literature focusing on the Vietnamese perspective has been available. The Joiner Center has been in the forefront of recent efforts to bring this perspective before the English speaking audience. With the assistance of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Witter Bynner Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, the center has initiated a number of efforts to bring works of Vietnamese literature before the general public. Efforts have included literary translation seminars for English Department faculty members from Vietnam sponsored through the Harvard-Yenching Institute and the university's Bilingual ESL Masters Program. Titles to date include: Le Luu's A Time Far Past; Mountain River: Vietnamese Poetry from the Wars; Distant Road: Selected Poems of Nguyen Duy; The Women Carry River Water: Selected Poems of Nguyen Quang Thieu; Six Vietnamese Poets; and Poems from Captured Documents.
