State Department Fellowships Overview

In 2001 the center contracted with the U.S. State Department to conduct a “Three Week Study Tour” for younger Vietnamese writers. Working with the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam and the Vietnamese Writers Association, thirteen you writers were selected and toured the U.S., meeting with writers, publishers, editors, university and writing programs in Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Iowa City, and San Francisco.


In 2003 the center received its first of two grants to conduct further three-month residency/study tours, aimed at bringing writers and artists from Vietnam together with writers and artists from countries emerging from conflicts. Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Exchanges, to date the program has brought together Vietnamese writers with writers from Northern Ireland (2), Rwanda, Bosnia (2), Nigeria, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Israel, and Lebanon.
